On an excavator, quick-release couplings carry the full working pressure of the auxiliary line that drives breakers, grapples, augers and tilt-rotators. The right coupling keeps the hydraulics clean, leak-free and fast to swap.
Why the coupling matters on an excavator
Attachment changes happen many times a day. A poor coupling leaks oil, lets in abrasive dust and fails early under impulse loads from breakers. The connection must match the machine's flow and pressure exactly.
Recommended standard: Flat Face (ISO 16028)
For excavators we recommend flat-face couplings (ISO 16028). The flat sealing surface virtually eliminates spillage when connecting and prevents contamination — essential on construction sites. They also handle higher pressure than classic ISO A.
Sizing by flow and pressure
- Match the coupling bore to the pump flow (l/min) to avoid pressure drop and overheating.
- Choose a pressure rating with margin above the auxiliary circuit's peak.
- Confirm the body and thread size (BSP/NPT/metric) against the machine ports.
Installation and maintenance tips
Relieve residual pressure before connecting, keep dust caps on when disconnected, and clean the faces before coupling. Inspect seals periodically and replace them in pairs.
